Welcome to our “Meet the Team” series, where we highlight the individuals who power our organisation.
Meet Sarah, our friendly and dedicated Hub Officer at Digital Jersey. Before joining us in 2019, Sarah’s career took her on a unique path through banking, finance, and even the States of Jersey prison service, where she served as a Prison Officer at HMP La Moye. Today, Sarah’s the heart of our Hub, always ready with a helping hand and ensuring every member and visitor feels welcomed. Read on to discover more about Sarah’s role, how she unwinds after a busy day, and her inspiring advice for young women stepping into the tech industry!
What do you do day-to-day in your role?
As Hub Officer, my role includes meeting and greeting all members/guests that come into the Hub and ensuring that they know who they are meeting and where they are going. I look after the day-to-day booking of the meeting rooms (this can be via email, telephone or in person) and ensure that the meeting rooms are set up to the requirements of the member. I onboard all our Individual Members and look after the invoicing. Of course, the most import job is ensuring that the Hub and tea/coffee facilities are always clean, tidy and topped up!!
What’s the best part of your role?
I love meeting people and learning about what they do, so my role fulfils this perfectly. Each day is different and you never know who is going to come through the door or what random email might land in your inbox. The Hub environment is super friendly and relaxed, which makes it a pleasure to come into each day.
What do you like to do to relax and wind down after work?
After a busy day at the Hub, followed by the arduous bus ride home, there’s nothing I love more than jumping into the shower and changing into my PJ’s. This is then followed by a strong cup of tea then settling down with my cats and a good book – my go to is anything about London True Crime. If I’m not reading, I’ll be watching some classics such as ‘Rising Damp’, Steptoe and Son’ or ‘The Sweeney’ – or if I’m feeling really adventurous it could even be an old school ‘Hammer Horror Film’! I have reignited my passion for writing poems (I find it very therapeutic) beginning by entering local competitions and have recently submitted my manuscript to a publisher for publication – so watch this space 😉
Do you have a favourite local spot in Jersey?
I enjoy walking the north coast cliff paths, especially around Sorel. On a clear day, the views of the Islands are incredible – almost hypnotic . One of my favourite cliff paths is Sorel Point to Devils Hole. It’s not too overzealous and the sheep are an added bonus, once I reach Devils Hole, it’s time for a lovely lunch at The Priory Inn before heading back.
Describe your perfect day off—what would you do?
My perfect day would begin with a leisurely morning, comprising of a cozy breakfast and a strong cup of tea. I’d take a wander round the various charity shops and see what bargains were on offer before heading out of a spot of lunch with my family at one of the many Garden Centres (any excuse to do some more shopping)! The afternoon would be spent either strolling around the Zoo or visiting one of the Heritage sites (the Castles and La Hougue Bie are my favourites) whilst also making time to indulge in a Jersey Cream tea. The day would wrap up with a relaxing evening of watching TV (obviously an old black and white film), or scrolling aimlessly on TikTok, followed by a fish and chip supper. 😊
How do you navigate working in a male-dominated industry?
Throughout my career, I have always worked in male-dominated industries and have loved the opportunity to challenge the stereotypes who have often held the archaic opinion that specific careers are gender based. I did sometimes feel the pressure to constantly prove my competence and skills in order to gain recognition and respect in the male-dominated environment. I navigated this with resilience and determination which helped to break down the barriers for future generations and paved the way for other women to follow in the industry. If you believe in yourself you can achieve anything!
What message would you like to give to young girls aspiring to enter the tech/digital sector?
From my own experience I would say always believe in yourself. Have confidence in your abilities – you belong in the digital sector just as much as anyone else. Take the opportunity to educate and train yourself using both online resources and in person courses. Having a role model can help as their advice and experiences can be invaluable. Connect with other women within the industry via networking events, professional organisations and online communities. These connections can provide support, opportunities and guidance. Never be afraid to take on challenges and to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Often growth comes from facing and overcoming obstacles. Don’t be discouraged by set-backs or obstacles – just keep pushing towards your end goal. Finally, don’t forget to have fun, enjoy the journey and celebrate your successes (however small) 😊 There are endless opportunities within the digital/tech sector for innovation, creativity, making a positive impact and more importantly for YOU…
